OCEAN Workshop
Early in the summer of 2012, Compass Light will be offering a one-week OCEAN workshop to qualified applicants, age 21-25 years, hosted on the Maine Coast. Bring your own field production gear -whether it be DSLR or video camera. We will set off on day expeditions to known locations in Penobscot Bay, as well as one overnight trip to an island, offering guided access to some of the East Coast’s most pristine and rugged landscapes. Evenings will be spent in one of our HD edit suites. Class size will be limited.
Instructor: David Conover
Coordinator: Mish Morgenstern
Assistants: Eleanor Conover and Hunter Snyder
When: Workshop one: June 10-16; Workshop two: dates TBD
Where: Camden, Maine and surrounding Penobscot Bay
Accommodations: The Birchwood Motel, Camden
Cost: $1600 per person, including accommodation
Goal: To further refine and deepen your experience of the ocean and to then create a short production of immediate use to an ocean-mission organization.
For you: Sharpen your maritime frame of context, reference, and inquiry. Why is the ocean important to you? Develop your creative and expressive capacity through original multi-media production about the sea. Design shots, acquire evidence, craft short-form sequences, record motion time-lapse, test hybrid and emerging program formats, refine it all in the FCP edit suites. Work individually, and in collaboration with other workshop participants. A pre-workshop reading list is provided.
For others: Inspire and further expand your network and service on behalf of the ocean, via placement of your media content with an ocean-mission partner. How can maritime media support leadership on the issues that matter? From the smartphone to television, from exhibit media to the big screen, how can it help move the needle on the dial? No reason to wait. We’ll make an introduction and you can begin to make a difference and extend your track record right now. We will also write up an evaluation for prospective future employers.
IMMERSIVE SEASCAPES: Provoking intuition through exploration of the Maine coast, islands, and ocean.
TRACKING LIGHT AND WATER: Sunrise, sunset, tides, fog and storms.
ENGAGING WITH MARINE LIFE: Wonder, sustenance, and the science of the living sea.
THE HUMAN OCEAN : Communities, impacts, histories, limits, literature, and opportunities.

Potential Ocean-Mission Partners:

NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program
The Gulf of Maine Research Institute
School of Marine Studies, University of Maine
